Can I go to bathroom?

「トイレ行っていい？」（"Can I go to bathroom?"）
「うん。」（"Yop."）

「ちょっとコンビニ寄っていい？」（"Can I stop at convenience store to buy something?"）
「いいよ。」（"Alright."）

Have you ever asked these questions to your boyfriend or girlfriend?
Honestly, I have.
I have asked my girlfriend to let me go to bathroom many times.

That's because I am a Japanese.
I asked these questions to my friend, my family, my co-woker and my girlfriend so many times.
Nobody said me that it was strange to ask these questions but my girlfriend.
She is from Europe.
When I asked if I could go to bathroom, she said "No."
It was first time that I couldn't get permission so I was perprexed.
Then she said "you don't actually ask me a permission. Why do you ask me such a stupid thing.lol"
That's true.
However, I still doubt it's only my girlfriend.
So I told this story my foreign friends from Amrica, Peru and Spain.
They laughed because they have same experience with my girlfriend.

umm.....it seems that asking permission to go bathroom is a Japnese unique culture...
.....but is it really true?????

「トイレに行っていい？」「なんか飲み物買ってきていい？」「ちょっとコンビニ寄っていい？」など、相手に承認を求めるようなことを日本人なら日常的に言っているでしょう。
もしあなたが恋人に「トイレに行っていい？」と聞いて、「だめ」と言われたらどうしますか？恐らくそういうみんなそういう経験をしたことがないので、誰もが一瞬困惑してしまうでしょう。
実は、私は恋人に「だめ」と言われたことがあります。そして、続けざまに「なんでそんなこと聞くの？それって実際に承認を求めているわけじゃないよね？」と言われました。
ずばりその通りです。尋ねるほうはまさか自分の正当な要求が否認されるとは誰も思いません。自分の要求が承認されることを前提に、聞いているのです。

なぜ、このような奇妙ともいえる会話になったのかと言うと、私の恋人が外国人（スロバキア人）だからです。彼女がは、ヨーロッパで「トイレ行っていい？」のようなことで承認を求める人はいないと言っていました。そして、そのことをアメリカ人とペルー人に話したとき、「日本人はみんなそういうことを言うけど、それは変だよね。」と言っていました。

というわけで、日本人のみなさん、外国に行ったらはっきりと「トイレに行ってくる」「ちょっとコンビニ寄る」と言い切るようにしましょう。
日本人以外のみなさんは、日本にきたら細かいことでもいちいち承認を求めてあげてください。
